Choose your Dolomites travel dates around trail access, lift schedules, summer storms and crowd levels.

For most hikers, the best time to visit the Dolomites is from late June to late September. July and August give you the widest choice of open lifts and mountain huts. June and September are usually quieter, but some services have shorter seasons.

The short answer

Choose late June or early July for green valleys, long days and fresh summer conditions. Choose September for cooler hiking weather and fewer people. Choose July or August when your route depends on the full lift and hut network.

Late June

Late June is a strong choice for lower and middle-altitude walks. The meadows are green, the days are long and the busiest summer weeks have not started.

Snow can remain on high paths and shaded passes. Some huts and lifts can also open later than the main valley services. Keep a lower route for days when a high trail is not ready.

July and August

July and August give you the largest choice of hikes. Most summer lifts run, mountain huts serve walkers and public transport has its main seasonal timetable.

These are also the busiest months. Popular car parks, cable cars and famous viewpoints can fill early. Start before the main day-trip traffic, use local buses when possible and book overnight huts in advance.

Warm mornings can become stormy afternoons. Start exposed hikes early and do not continue onto a ridge when the forecast is unstable.

September

September often has clear air, cooler temperatures and quieter trails. It is a good month for day hikes from Val Gardena, Alta Badia or Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The main risk is service closure. Some lifts and huts stop during September, and cold weather can arrive quickly at altitude. Build the trip around confirmed opening dates, not the general summer season.

Early October

Early October can be beautiful in the valleys, especially when the larch trees change colour. It is better for flexible day walks than for a fixed hut-to-hut route.

Expect fewer open lifts, shorter days and a real chance of early snow. A car gives you more options when seasonal buses stop, but you must still check road and pass conditions.

Winter and spring

Winter is a separate ski and snow activity season. Standard hiking routes can be covered by snow and can cross avalanche terrain. Use winter routes and suitable local advice.

Spring is not a simple extension of summer. Melting snow, closed huts and wet ground can limit high routes well into June.

How to choose your week

Use these priorities:

  • For the widest choice of routes, choose July or August.
  • For fewer people, choose late June or September.
  • For hut-to-hut hiking, match every night to a confirmed hut opening date.
  • For photography and cool walking conditions, choose September.
  • For a first trip, keep one flexible day for cloud, rain or storms.
